Short Everest Base Camp Trek - 12 Days

Overview

Ever since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay scaled the peak of Mount Everest in 1953, other adventurers have wanted to emulate their feat. Many people nowadays seek the thrill of standing at the top of the world, and we can help you get there. Mosaic Adventure can take you all the way to Everest Base Camp and on a journey through the beautiful Khumbu region and Sagamartha National Park on this Short Everest Base Camp Trek.

The Everest Base Camp trek is not for the faint hearted. After eight days of walking, high altitudes, rocky tracks and some steep inclines that would scare a mountain goat, a feeling of accomplishment awaits you when you arrive at the camp. What makes the experience even better is the knowledge that Everest Base Camp is higher than a lot of the peaks of other mountains!

Your adventure begins after a flight, that is itself breath taking, to the mountain town of Lukla. You will need to bring plenty of SD cards for your camera to snap the million photo opportunities as you trek through the magical Himalayas. With spectacular views of Kwangde, Nuptse, Lhotse, Kangtega, AmaDablam and Everest, your camera will seem to be permanently attached to your face. The bustling Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar is the gateway to the high Himalaya and is an impressive sight not to be missed. Neither are the colorful homes and teahouses that are dotted along the hillside. The approach to Tyangboche is something that will be firmly imprinted on your mind for years to come as you gaze out to the ornate monastery that sits among the most amazing panoramic mountain backdrop you will have ever seen.

As the altitude increases, so does the remoteness of the landscape. You cannot help but wonder how the locals survive in such an environment. As you watch them follow their ancient traditions and live a simple life that is still largely undisturbed by the hustle and bustle of western society, you will wonder if their way of life might be better than the one you have left behind.

After reaching Everest Base Camp, an inevitable sense of achievement will clear all other thoughts from your mind as you truly sit among giants and stare silently at their snow covered peaks. After rejoicing in your conquest of this famous route, we will take you to the summit of Kala Patthar at a height of 5545 meters so you can witness Mount Everest in all her glory. As she towers majestically above the other glistening peaks of the Himalayas, you will gain memories that will last a lifetime. Any concerns you may have had about undertaking this trek will seem further away than sea level.

Before you book your flight home:
Please keep some free days as a buffer at the end of the trip because the flight from Lukla could be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. The beautiful Himalayas are beholden to no person and your Short Everest Base Camp trek could take longer than expected!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Expand/Close
How fit do I have to be?

This Short Everest Base Camp trek is considered to be a relatively strenuous trekking route in Nepal. However, that does not mean that you require any previous trekking or mountaineering experience. You are attempting to reach Everest Base Camp, not climbing to the summit itself. It is not required that you have any technical experience, only that you are in good physical condition and are able to walk for four to six hours per day over hilly terrain with a light backpack. If you are not an experienced trekker or do not exercise regularly, we recommend that you embark on a training program well in advance of commencing this trip. You will be given plenty of time to rest throughout the trek and the pace will be slow to help you acclimatize safely to the increasing altitude. Please read the preparation guidelines for an Everest Base Camp Trek.

What is the level of accommodation like?

In Kathmandu, your accommodation will usually be in a hotel that has a reception and dining room. It will often include air conditioning and an attached bathroom. The level of accommodation is generally Nepalese three star and is comfortable and clean. There are many 4 star and 5 star options available in Kathmandu and we can arrange an upgrade for an extra cost. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you require information about this.

Once you start the Everest Base Camp trek, you will be staying in “Teahouses.” Accommodation is limited, especially the higher you get, so your room may vary from a private single or double room to a bed in a dormitory. Bed mattresses are usually firm and not the spring mattresses that you may be use to at home. The accommodation is very basic and there will usually be a shared shower and toilet facilities. There is a communal dining hall in all teahouses that offers limited meal choices. Although basic, the teahouses are clean and are a welcoming, friendly and warm resting place after a hard day’s trekking.

Is enough drinking water available? How many litres of water should we carry in our day pack?

We ask that all our customers bring a water bottle and water purification tablets with them. These can be bought in Kathmandu if forgotten. Mosaic supports responsible tourism so we do not encourage trekkers to buy bottled water when they are in the Himalayan region. Even though it is available, there is no proper disposal system for plastic bottles. We would like to keep the mountains clean and free from rubbish. There is plenty of water available along the way to fill your bottles and most brands of purification tablets take just 30 minutes to work before you are able to drink the water. We recommend that you drink a minimum of three to four liters of water per day when on your trek.

Where can I keep my luggage?

Any luggage that you do not need to take with you on the Everest Base Camp trek can be kept securely in the hotel in Kathmandu or in the store room of our office.

Do I need to take walking poles?

Walking poles are not essential but can be useful, especially on your descent. Poles help you balance on the way down and take the strain off of your legs when you are on some of the steep climbs. You can buy or hire poles in Kathmandu and they can be easily collapsed so that you can attach them to your backpack when they are not needed.

Can I buy any equipment in Kathmandu before the start of the trip?

There are plenty of trekking shops in Kathmandu selling equipment that is inexpensive compared to the prices you would normally pay at home. However, the quality of these products cannot always be guaranteed. We recommend you buy major items such as trekking shoes before you arrive in Nepal. It is also recommended you buy your shoes well in advance of your trek so you can break them in and avoid blisters during your trip. Read the Packing list for Everest Base Camp Trek.

Can I recharge my iPod, batteries and camera while on the mountain?

Yes, you can charge them in the teahouses. Please remember that the plugs might be different to what you use at home so don’t forget to bring adapters with you or to buy them in Kathmandu before the trip. You will have to pay for the electricity to recharge your electrical items which is usually at a cost of USD $2-3 per hour.

Is it recommended to get a Nepalese visa in advance or at the airport?

Most people can obtain a visa on entry into Nepal. There are some countries where a visa will need to be obtained prior to travelling. You can find a list of these countries at www.immi.gov.np.

If you want to avoid the sometimes lengthy queues at the airport, you can obtain a visa from the Nepalese embassy in your home country before you travel. Please visit the appropriate websites in your country for details.

All visitors to Nepal will need to fill in a landing card. If your airline does not provide one of these before landing in Kathmandu, they will be available in the airport. If you want to obtain a visa on arrival, you will need to pay a feethat depends on your length of stay. You will have to provide a passport photo to the immigration officers so remember to bring one in your hand luggage. Visa fees are as follows:

USD $25 for 15 days.
USD $40 for 30 days.
USD $100 for 90 days.
This fee information was obtained from the Nepal Immigration Department.

We would advise you to bring US dollars to pay for your visa even though most major currencies are usually accepted. There is a bureau de change in the airport but problems will arise if they will not accept the currency you have brought. Since you may not get the best exchange rate either, it is always a safe bet to bring US dollars.

Can we take showers during the trek?

Showers are available in the teahouses. They will usually be in shared bathrooms in most of the teahouses, especially as you go higher up.Each person will have to pay for a hot water shower. The higher you are, the colder it gets and you may find that you do not want to shower as often. You can wait a few days until your descent.

How much money per day do you think I will need? What currency should I take?

The local currency in Nepal is the rupee. We recommend you bring US dollars with you to Nepal because these can be exchanged here easily. The amount of money you will need on a daily basis depends on your spending habits. A rough guide would be $10 per day for extra drinks while doing the Everest Base Camp trek and $20 per day to cover lunch and dinner while in Kathmandu.

What do I have to carry with me on the trek?

You will need to carry a backpack that is big enough to hold personal items such as a camera, water, snacks, sunscreen, a hat, a fleece jacket and some gloves for higher altitudes. The porters will carry the bigger packs with your clothes and larger items. They will carry packs of up to 20kgs.

What happens if I get sick while on the trek?

The action we take depends on the nature of the sickness. Usually, if you become sick, you will descend to a lower altitude with the help and support of the guide and porters. If you are seriously ill, we will arrange an emergency evacuation by helicopter. Our guide will take immediate action according to the situation. Please ensure your travel insurance covers you for an evacuation service and trekking at high altitudes.

Altitude sickness can affect everyone while trekking, including young and healthy people. It is a genuine concern at higher altitudes. If you have symptoms like dizziness and headaches you should return to a lower altitude as soon as possible. Do not take altitude sickness lightly. It can be fatal! Please familiarise yourself with the symptoms of altitude sickness before your trek. Do not ignore even the mildest symptoms. Inform your guide immediately!

Our guides carry basic medicine and first aid equipment such as painkillers, altitude sickness tablets, bandages, balm for muscle ache and medication to treat diarrhoea and vomiting.

These are the questions we are asked most often about the Everest Base Camp trek and hope you will find the answers useful. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any further queries.
