What are restricted areas in Nepal?
Nepal has many adventurous places and exotic locations that attract trekkers from around the world. Some of these places fall under what the government calls restricted areas, which means special permits are required to enter.
Some areas in Nepal are strictly controlled for tourists to protect natural beauty, rich heritage, culture and environment. To visit such places, you need special arrangements and a Nepal Restricted Area Permit (RAP) issued by the immigration authorities.
These areas are opened for tourists since October 1991. Trekkers are not allowed to trek alone in restricted areas of Nepal. A minimum of two trekkers is required, and the trek must be arranged through a registered local trekking agency.

Popular treks like Langtang Valley Trek, Everest Base Camp Trek, and Annapurna Circuit Trek do not require restricted area permits, and trekkers are not required to use a registered trekking agency. But for treks like Upper Mustang, Manaslu, Kanchenjunga, and Dolpo, you must obtain a restricted area permit through a registered local trekking agency in Nepal.
Who needs to obtain a Nepal Restricted area permit?
Anyone who wants to enter a restricted area in Nepal must obtain a Restricted Area Permit (RAP). This applies to all foreign nationals, and the permit must be processed through a government-authorized trekking company, who obtains it through Immigration Department of Nepal. Note: Permit fees vary by region and season. Some areas have higher fees during peak trekking months such as September to November.

Where can you obtain a Restricted Area Trekking Permit in Nepal?
- To obtain trekking permit to enter Nepal Restricted Area, an application form along with required documents must be submitted through a registered trekking agency in Nepal, such as Mosaic Adventure.
- Trekking fee can be paid in USD: Notwithstanding anything written in above, the Indian citizen can pay in Nepalese currency equivalent to US Dollars.
Common question: Can I apply for a Nepal restricted area permit on my own? No. Nepal regulations require that all restricted area permits are issued only through licensed trekking agencies.
