Glossary for Everest Base Camp Trek

Get ready for your Everest Base Camp adventure with our essential glossary of terms. Whether you’re a beginner attempting EBC for the first time, an expert trekker, or simply looking to enhance your knowledge, understanding these terms will ensure you’re prepared for the journey ahead.

Acclimatization

This is when your body slowly gets used to the lower oxygen levels (thinner air) and lower air pressure at high altitude destinations like the Himalayas. To prevent altitude sickness, you must take your time and ascend slowly.

Importance: Proper acclimatization is the most important thing to avoid Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Our 14-day classic EBC itinerary always includes at least two full rest days (like in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche) to let your body naturally adapt to the thin air.

Altitude Sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness – AMS)

Definition: Symptoms like headache, nausea, and dizziness caused by being at high altitudes, typically above 3000 meters during trekking.

Prevention: The absolute best way to prevent AMS is to walk slowly (Bistarai Bistarai!), stay well hydrated, and follow a gradual ascent plan. Some people take prescribed medication like Diamox to help their body adjust, but nothing works if you climb too fast.
